Over 35 Years of Technical knowhow!

The MOT test checks that your vehicle meets road safety and environmental standards. You must get an MOT for your vehicle by either: the third anniversary of its registration. the anniversary of its last MOT, if it’s over 3 years old. During the MOT, important parts on your vehicle will be checked to make sure they meet the legal standards. It isn’t the same as having your vehicle serviced and doesn’t check its general mechanical condition. The test doesn’t cover the condition of the engine, clutch or gearbox.

The main areas which will be checked are lights, steering and suspension, wheels and tyres, frame, brakes, exhaust, fuel system, seats, horn, registration plate, chain and sprockets, throttle, clutch lever and foot rests. There are a few special rules for off road motorbikes and ones fitted with side cars. More information can be found on the Government MOT website

Top Tips for preparing your motorbike for its MOT

Make sure all the lights fitted to the bike are working.

Ensure the tyres have legal tread depth.

Have a standard exhaust, or an after market exhaust which is NOT louder than the standard exhaust. It also can't be labelled 'Not for Road Use'.

The registration plate needs to be the standard size and must have a small reflector badge fitted on it by law.

The horn has to work.

The brakes will be tested, so they need to work well and release straight away.

What if your motorcycle fails the MOT test?

Not to worry, you will be given a failure sheet which details all the reasons for failure. You are free to take your motorcycle away and rectify the problems, if you bring it back within 10 days it will be re-tested for (most of the time) free. If you wish for Ribble Valley ATV and Motorcycles to sort any of the failure points out then we will be happy to help.
